The first words

Enquiry: My son has recently had an implant. When can I realistically expect to hear him say his first words? Reply: This question will be one that most parents will be asking when their child first receives an implant but there is no answer to it. As with hearing children saying their first words, there will be huge variation with children with cochlear implants. Once the implant has been switched...

Processor keeps falling off

Enquiry: My son has just updgraded from Advanced Bionics body worn to Harmony BTE. We are having real problems keeping the processors on his head, we have tupee tape which is helping a bit. He wears glasses too so these are getting in the way. Any suggestions or advice? Reply: I am presuming that he is wearing the processor with the ‘off the body’ option for the battery. Just in case here is the link to information abo...

Siblings

Enquiry: I have an 18 month old who received her implant six months ago. I also have another daughter who is three and a half years old. I just never seem to have time for my older daughter as there always seems so much to do with the little one. Has anybody got any ideas about how to ensure that she doesn't lose out? Baby sign classes

Enquiry: I have a deaf baby who will shortly be implanted. Quite a few of my friends who have hearing babies go to baby sign language groups. Is it a good idea to take my baby too? I have been encouraged to communicate naturally with my child but I’m interested in sign language and wonder if these classes will be suitable? Reply: The use of sign with deaf babies has been the subject of much discussion and indeed disagreement in the pa...

Getting information for our baby in Japan.

Enquiry: I am living and working in Japan with my wife. Our daughter has recently been diagnosed as profoundly deaf. I have found it very difficult to get hold of material in English. We have received conflicting advice already here regarding the timing of receiving an implant. I am basically trying to work out what questions we need to be asking the specialists. Body worn or behind the ear for young children?

Enquiry: I am working with a child who has been implanted for 2:06 now and is making good progress. I recently asked mum about the possibility of an on-the-ear processor (child is now in reception) and she said that she and dad had discussed this and decided not to ask for this because they understood that the sound quality was better with the body-worn processor. I am curious to know if this is true, partly because the radio aid, a Genie, is particularly di...
