Assessing deaf children's writing

Enquiry: I work with primary aged deaf children. I wonder what assessments there are for assessing children’s writing. I can describe what a child does with his writing and I can do an analysis of errors but I am looking for something more structured. What is anybody using? 8 year old finding reading difficult

Enquiry : I am currently working with a 7 year old boy, with bilateral implants, who is having difficulty in learning to read. Any advice ? He is a bright little thing, very competent in maths, but when it comes to reading, he really struggles. He lost his hearing through severe meningitis at 17 months- can there be any connection?
