Tinnitus post implantation

Enquiry: I’m still struggling with tinnitus two weeks after my switch on. I’ve always had tinnitus and now I’m frightened that this whole thing is going to make my tinnitus worse. What is other people’s experience of this please? Reply: It is believed that a cochlear implant can alleviate tinnitus. In some parts of Europe and now (as a trial) even in the UK, people who have terrible tinnitus but no hearing loss are recei...

Mapping a three year old

Enquiry: My 3 year old son is due to be bi-laterally implanted in the next 4 weeks. He was initially diagnosed as moderately-severe deafness. He has worn hearing aids from 3months although with grommets glue ear and ear infections, he has never worn them for any great length of time. It's only been since March this year that any hearing aid showed any improvement in his hearing. He is now diagnosed as profoundly deaf hence the implant. I'm not sure of what map...

Is it worth waiting for the upgrade?

Enquiry: My son who is seven and a half, currently uses a single the Sprint bodyworn processor and is doing very well with it. He is being offered an upgrade to the Freedom as the new Nucleus 5 is not yet compatible with his internal implant and won’t be for another 18 months. So I have to decide whether he should go ahead with the Freedom now or wait 18 months to receive the latest model. If we go with the Freedom now, he will have to wait a considerable ti...

Battery life with new processor

Enquiry: My daughter, who was implanted in 1996 and is now 16, has recently been upgraded from a 3G to a Freedom processor and while she has no complaints about the listening experience, the battery life has gone down drastically. She has now swapped to rechargeable batteries but they usually only last for about three hours and then she has to change them. She is now desperate to get her 3G back again. The clinic has said that this is not possible. Have you...

Not happy with new processor

Enquiry I upgraded to the Freedom from the ESPrit around a year ago, and have been struggling with the Freedom ever since. I have gone back to the ESPrit software/programme on the Freedom, with the same map but I still cannot hear functionally with it.[/co I cannot hear people in general situations like in a driving car, when I could with ESPrit, and rely on active lip reading which is not normal for me. I would describe the sounds as 'tinny' , like all the s...

Enquiry: Our daughter is four months old and we have been told that she is almost certainly profoundly deaf. We have an appointment with the ENT specialist next week. We have asked whether now is the right time to raise the issue of whether she can have a cochlear implant and were told that we should leave it until she is a year old. What is your view? Reply: While four months may be too young to be implanted, It is not t...

Enquiry We have a boy just started with our school who is 7 years old. He is wearing a Pulsar ci100 and Tempo+ speech processor that was fitted in october 2005.
