Interference from PA system
Enquiry: Hi, I now have the Phonak Smartlink+ radio aid system with the Phonak Microlink receiver for my CI. I am picking up loads more now. Anyway, at my local Methodist church I have always used my Connevans FM Genie previously and it has never caused any problems with the church's own wireless radio mike for its PA system. Yesterday I used my Phonak Smartlink+ system at church and for some reason, the church 's wireless radio mike for the ch...

How can I shut out a loud voice?
EnquiryThere is a woman who is in the office over the corridor who talks rather loudly and my implant picks that up and as it's a woman's voice which is more high frequency, the way my implant pick up and process her voice (although I cannot discriminate what she is saying), the sound is quite loud and unpleasant and makes it very difficult for me to concentrate and so I end up not wearing my cochlear implant so then I can concentrate better. So I am not maxim...

Clarification on Nucleus 5
Enquiry:How do you turn on a MLxS/MicroMLxS before connecting the Euro Accessory Adaptor to the processor? They take their power from the processor battery? Reply: This is the correct advice from Cochlear. It means that you switch the control on the receiver to ‘on’ ( two green dots), but as you rightly say it won’t actually turn it on until you turn on the processor. The receiver has to be on for the ...

Nucleus 5 and FM systems - update
Enquiry: I would like to know what your policy/thinking is about the fitting of the Nucleus 5 Cochlear implant with regard to FM systems? Is everything ok with it? Reply: It has always been possible to use the Nucleus 5 with a bodyworn radio aid. With the Genie for example, you need to attach the Freedom accessories adaptor to the back of the processor. You can then attach the special cochlear impl...

Distortion with FM?
Enquiry: I have heard one argument against using radio aids with implanted children as early as you would with aided children in terms of the contribution the damaged outer hair cells make to the internal noise/distortion levels perceived by the aided child but not by the implanted child. What is the evidence on this? Reply: There does not seem to be any evidence for this. Implants have very definite limi...

bilateral use of FM system?
Enquiry: I have an enquiry regarding the use of radio aids with bilateral cochlear implants. At the moment there appears to be conflicting information regarding the benefits of using radio aids with these children, particularly in the early years. The suggestion has been made that young children should not have a radio aid till mid primary school age. The reason given for this advice is the fear that if radio aids are issued too early then this could lead to t...
