11 year old with dyslexia

Enquiry: I have an eleven year old on my casebook who has an implant. She is clearly a bright girl but her literacy skills are very poor. She has had an implant since the age of three and although she has intelligible speech, it is very definitely deaf speech. I just feel that she might have dyslexia. What assessments would you suggest that I carry out to see if she is... and if she is, then what?! Reply:

Time for concern?

EnquiryOur 9 year old son has a cochlear implant which he got 5 years ago. He was diagnosed very late (almost 3) and has made very little progress with speech since having the implant. He has a reasonable vocabulary of one / two word sentences and can understand simple verbal instructions but relies heavily on sign to make sense of what he is hearing. His progress both at home and school is very inconsistent. For instance, we will sometimes ge...

Young child with auditory neuropathy

Enquiry : What are the benefits in implanting a child with auditory neuropathy and a possible severe hearing loss? He is 15months old. Reply: This is a difficult question to answer because auditory neuropathy (AN) is so complex and each case is highly individual. The hearing levels of children with auditory neuropathy can fluctuate and need monitoring carefully, using objective measures (e.g. ABR) as well the usual listening assessments. ...

Reading and meningitis

Enquiry Is there any connection between poor reading ability and being deafened through meningitis? Is there any research on this? Reply: The first thing to establish is where exactly the reading process is breaking down. Does he understand the purpose of reading? Is he able to recognize any whole words? Are his reading difficulties related to limited language? Is he unable to remember and decode even simple words? About 40% of deaf ch...
