Cochlear implant simulation for INSET
Enquiry: Is there a down load on listening through implants that I can use for a forthcoming INSET i am delivering in April
Reply: A number of different simulations have been produced. The one we are inclined to use at The Ear Foundation is the one produced by Arthur Boothroyd from work by Robert Shannon. You can find it at this link and then click on the link at the top of the page which takes you to a PowerPoint presentation. You then need to start the show in order to hear the simulations.
Another simulation produced by David Canning can be found at Hear to Learn
Another excellent resource on listening for an INSET presentation is Room Acoustics and Speech Perception: The Basics by Arthur Boothroyd which is available free of charge from PC Werth.
You may already know about the Hear To Learn DVD from the NDCS which has an excellent section on listening which shows exactly how all the background noises in a classroom effect the child.
Another resource you might want to look at is Getting it Right - a DVD from The Ewing Foundation which is especially good for showing about using a radio aid correctly and incorrectly but it is rather long to show in its entirety in a general INSET session.
