Dual language resource MED EL

Dual- Language Learning for Children with Hearing Loss: Assessment, Intervention and Program Development

This resource from MED EL written by Michael Douglas, (M.A., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT) draws on his vast experience of working with families and young children with hearing loss who come from families that speak more than one language with a range of proficiency in the differing languages. The resource was developed to assist professionals with issues surrounding assessment and intervention for children with a hearing loss who are culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD). It also provides a guideline for administrators in developing a program for bilingual children.

Newbury park LOTM project

Newbury Park School Language of the Month (LOTM ) Resources

Newbury Park School has developed a wonderful project called Language of the Month (LOTM ) which celebrates the different backgrounds of the pupils at Newbury Park. The project encourages understanding of other cultures and gives the children an opportunity to communicate in a different language each month.

All children, from the Nursery to Year 6, participate in the scheme, which highlights the value of all languages. Each month, one pupil becomes the ‘language expert’, recording words and phrases for everyone to learn and giving an insight into their culture. Each month teachers receive a resource pack with display materials, suggested activities and audio and video clips of basic words and phrases recorded by a pupil at the school and a family member.

In 2005 the school was awarded the “European Award for Languages” and the “Community Language Prize”.

The best bit is the LOTM resources are all available on the Newbury School website to use and enjoy.

For those of you hoping to start straight away though the school has said parts of the website are under a construction phase. So if you have any difficulties getting on be patient and keep on trying the link!
