My radio aid drives me mad

ProblemI'm so fed up with my radio aid. It keeps crackling all the time. When the teacher listens to it, she says it sounds fine, but it's not fine. It drives me mad. A man came to school to check the radio aid and it sounded ok when he was doing it but now it's rubbish again. The teacher won't listen to me. What can I do?

Answer Most deaf people at school know about this problem with radio aids. The companies are improving radio aids all the time but the trouble is that the perfect radio aid for cochlear implants has not yet been invented. It's very annoying when teachers tell you that everything is all right. The problem is that sometimes the problem is intermittent (it doesn't happen all the time). There can be lots of reasons for this..... eg sometimes they work better in some rooms than others.
It never helps to fall out with the teacher so why don't you go to the teacher and calmly suggest that you keep a record of what happens with the radio aid for a week. There is an example of the sort of sheet we mean on Sounding Board for Teens. Here is the link. When you have kept the record for a week, arrange a time when you can talk to the teacher when she's not busy doing other things. SIt down and talk through what has been happening with the radio aid. Say something like, "I feel so frustrated. I don't want to wear the radio aid if it's not working. Is there anything you can do to make it better?! Then wait and see if there is anything she can do to help.
Let us know what happens.
